About The Position

This position is a 1.0 FTE located at Syphax Education Center. The Assistive Technology Specialist is responsible for providing evaluation, implementation, training, and ongoing maintenance for assistive technology hardware and software to enable students with assistive technology needs equal to curriculum and full participation in their education and classroom. In addition, to serve as a resource in the area of assistive technology to staff, students, and parents.

Requirements

  • Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure.
  • Special Education or Related Field endorsement.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills, both verbal and written.
  • Creative problem solving skills.
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Ability to present to small and medium-sized audiences.
  • Knowledge of needs and behaviors of students with IEPs and 504 accommodations.
  • Coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility in dealing with job and schedule.
  • Assume responsibility and display initiative.
  • Handle and maintain confidential information regarding students, staff, and parents.

Nice To Haves

  • Dual endorsement in English as a Second Language and/or Special Education, or in any other content area, is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary contact for all AsTech assessment consultations and referrals.
  • Monitor student use of assistive technology hardware and software.
  • Consult and collaborate with staff on available assistive technology hardware and software.
  • Coordinate the purchase of appropriate assistive technology hardware and software.
  • Evaluate, coordinate, train and support students who require assistive technology.
  • Coordinate trainings and support for students, staff, and parents working with the students who requires assistive technology.
  • Troubleshoot assistive technology issues to ensure effective daily operation of hardware and software, as needed.
  • Make minor repairs, or arrange for the repair of hardware/software that are not functioning properly.
  • Work with assistive technology vendors to manage registration, licenses, and warranty information on all assistive technology hardware and software.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of assistive technology hardware and software; and maintain accurate records and files, and prepare reports related to student performance.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and training opportunities.
  • Stay current with changing and emerging technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
