About The Position

Colby College, a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), offers 28 intercollegiate sports at the Division III level and four programs at the Division I level. The department also hosts club and intramural sports, with over one-third of its 2,200 students participating in intercollegiate sports and nearly three-quarters involved in fitness and recreation. The College boasts a new, state-of-the-art athletics complex, featuring an indoor track and field center, aquatic center with Maine’s first 50-meter pool, squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, strength and fitness center, training rooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, a 70-acre-plus outdoor competition center with three new fields has been opened. The Colby College Department of Athletics is seeking an assistant women’s basketball coach for the period of July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. This role involves assisting the head coach in all aspects of running a competitive Division III basketball program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • Previous experience coaching and or/competing at the collegiate level is highly desirable
  • Committed to the values of a liberal arts education

  • Must be organized, take initiative, and utilize strong time management skills
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
  • Ability to travel for team practices, competition, and scouting in and out of state
  • Strong positive communication and interpersonal skills with all levels
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality with regard to employee data, documents, issues, etc., and respect privacy needs of employees and past employees with regard to the same.
  • Ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required.
  • Ability to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in situations where individuals express opinions or exhibit strong emotions.
  • Frequently required to move around the office space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
  • Multiple/daily instances of prolonged personal computer use which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Mental ability to shift focus quickly due to interruptions; ability to mentally track multiple projects and tasks.

Responsibilities

  • On-site coaching in games and practices, including organization and implementation of daily practices
  • Prepare film breakdown and analysis, and present analysis to team members
  • Plan and prepare for games
  • Contribute to strength and conditioning program, including one-on-one strength and conditioning work with student athletes
  • Provide support and encouragement to student athletes, including academic counseling and advising
  • Monitor academic progress of athletes
  • Research academic and athletic credentials
  • Build relationships with prospective student athletes and their families through email, phone and one-on-one meetings
  • Recruit and retain talented athletes successfully
  • Assist in organizing and implementing recruit visits
  • Understand NCAA rules, compliance, and laws
  • Ensure safety and well-being of student athletes
  • Serve as an effective role model for college-age students
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the women’s basketball program
  • Provide effective communication to head coach
  • Collaborate effectively with other Department of Athletics’ team members
  • Assist with the coordination of team travel
