About The Position

The Assistant Wellness Director serves as the supervisor for the shift in the absence of the Wellness Director. This role involves coordinating resident care, delegating tasks to Resident Care Assistants (RCAs) and Medication Technicians (MTs), and overseeing the overall function of the Wellness Department during their shift. The Assistant Wellness Director is also responsible for making community decisions when both the Executive Director and Wellness Director are unavailable. This position reports to the Wellness Director.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Must be a licensed nurse in the state where you work.
  • Minimum of two years of nursing experience.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak in English.
  • Must be in good physical health and free of communicable diseases.
  • Lifting, bending, and pushing a medication cart within the community is required.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
  • Completion of drug testing and criminal background check upon hire and upon request of supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and delegates work assignments to ensure effective shift coverage and coordinates care during their shift.
  • Supervises the delivery of personal care to residents and implements service plans, collecting data on resident health status.
  • Acts as the shift supervisor, coaching and counseling RCAs/MTs on care practices and standards, and following disciplinary procedures when necessary.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor when interacting with residents and families, using tactful and diplomatic communication.
  • Reports any suspected or witnessed instances of abuse to the Wellness Director and takes appropriate action.
  • Administers medications according to physician orders and accurately documents administration on the MAR.
  • Conducts change of shift reports with oncoming/outgoing personnel.
  • Maintains security of the medication cart and narcotic keys, and conducts narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Transcribes physician orders, reviews MARs for accuracy, and notifies the pharmacy of changes.
  • Responds to emergencies promptly and calmly.
  • Orients and trains new associates, and reports on their knowledge, skills, and abilities to the Wellness Director.
  • Monitors e-call system equipment and caregiver response to ensure timely assistance.
  • Maintains resident charts, reports significant changes in resident condition to the physician and responsible party, and documents all observations and follow-through.
  • Understands and uses Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Standard Precautions, OSHA's Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens, and other safety rules.
  • Operates designated medical equipment, copy, scan, fax machines, and telephones.
  • Documents and reports resident incidents as required by state regulations.
  • Assists the Wellness Director in ensuring community compliance for the wellness department.
  • Reviews pharmacy consultant recommendations, contacts physicians, and updates MAR and treatment plans.
  • May administer TB skin testing on new associates and residents per state regulation.
  • Assists in other assignments delegated by the Wellness Director or Executive Director to ensure community and wellness department compliance.
  • Serves as backup to the Wellness Director for completing assessments, service plans, and other required documentation for current and new residents.
  • Plans the wellness schedule at least two weeks in advance, preferably one month.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation for staffing and care needs, responsible for finding coverage for open shifts.
  • Is available by phone 24/7 while on-call and able to fill open shifts if needed.
  • Participates in and supports the resident-centered activities program.
  • Functions as a team member in sharing responsibilities for resident services.
  • Keeps the Wellness Director informed of all changes in resident health and any shift problems.
  • Participates in all staff meetings and other required meetings.
  • Demonstrates appreciation for residents' heritage, values, and wisdom, and understands the aging process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Wellness Director or Executive Director.
