About The Position

The Assistant Warden I is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the total administrative and programmatic activities of the department. This role involves providing staff training, evaluating performance, and implementing organizational changes in coordination with the Warden and Human Resources Manager. The position also entails developing and managing departmental budgets, implementing policies and procedures affecting security, and overseeing the training and counseling of detainees. The Assistant Warden I must ensure the security of staff and detainees through constant vigilance and proper staff assignments, and oversee the preparation of detainee reports for the classification committee. Additionally, the role involves monitoring staff selection to ensure legal and regulatory compliance and promoting positive social skills among detainees through modeling and feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and direct the total administrative programmatic activities of the department.
  • Provide staff training, evaluate staff performance, and implement organizational and personnel changes as approved by the Warden, and coordinate with the Human Resources Manager prior to implementation.
  • Develop departmental budgets; monitor and control expenditures. Review and recommend changes to budget authorizations.
  • Develop and implement new and revised policies and procedures affecting security. Coordinate with other departments to ensure compliance with overall facility objectives.
  • Direct procedures and practices relating to the training and counseling of detainees and security of staff and detainees; maintain constant vigilance of employees and detainees through staff assignments to ensure that policies, rules and regulations are being adhered to, and that none are violated.
  • Provide, through administrative staff assignments, proper number of officers, and other personnel for all administrative and security functions; oversee preparation of work and other related reports on detainees for the classification committee and permanent record of detainees showing progress and estimating rehabilitative prospects.
  • Monitor staff selection process of potential employees to ensure adherence to all applicable laws, LaSalle Correctional and state regulations, and select qualified applicants to fill vacancies as needed.
  • Oversee the direction of disciplinary and grievance procedures affecting detainees.
  • Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed. Provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
  • Maintain accountability of staff detainees and property; adhere to safety practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.
