About The Position

This full-time position assists the Merchandising Manager and Distribution Manager in the placement of goods on the sales floor for the SDSU Bookstore and satellite operations. Responsibilities include assisting with inventory control, floor moves involving product and fixture placement, and creating window displays. The role also involves assisting in the management of part-time employees in the merchandising area. The position requires the ability to develop training workshops for employees on visual merchandise standards, assist in planning and executing merchandise-driven events, and supervise part-time employees in daily operations. This includes setting work priorities, conducting staff meetings, coordinating sales training, and evaluating performance. The role also involves assisting in the planning, replenishment, and rotation of merchandise for all categories, with a focus on apparel, gifts, and computers/electronics. Planning and execution of major floor moves using floor plans, attending selected sporting events to understand customer demands, and working closely with the Merchandising Manager, Distribution Manager, and General Merchandise department for incoming merchandise and space allocation are also key responsibilities. The position assists with the stock replenishment program for all locations, including athletic venues, and helps maintain sign and fixture libraries. Collaboration with the Graphics and Marketing team for window displays and signage, as well as assisting in planning and implementing promotional efforts and communicating them to store personnel, are also part of the role. The Assistant Visual Merchandising Manager enforces compliance with security regulations and internal controls, ensures the merchandise area has necessary supplies, and may perform subordinate work during busy periods. Developing and maintaining working relationships with customers, coworkers, vendors, student organizations, faculty, staff, and University personnel is essential. Compliance with all company policies, and federal, state, and local laws/regulations, including employment, safety, and health, is mandatory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field; plus 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills are required.
  • Must be able to read, write and understand English.
  • Requires the ability to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.
  • Requires the ability to read, comprehend, analyze, and interpret general business information, governmental regulations, and technical/trade journals.

  • Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral visions, distance vision, and color vision for extensive reading and interpretation of reports and documents.
  • Must have the ability to talk/expressing and/or exchanging ideas and hear/perceiving sounds.
  • The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act pursuant to California Penal Code Section 11166.5 .
  • Candidates must be available to work a flexible schedule based on operational needs. This may include opening, mid-day, and closing shifts, as well as night shifts, weekends, and holidays throughout the year.

  • Assists in planning and implementing promotional efforts and communicating these efforts/plans to store personnel.

  • Ensures the merchandise area has the necessary supplies and materials to operate effectively.
