About The Position

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) reports directly to the Senior Vice President (SVP) – Excess Casualty and Construction. The AVP will balance supporting the SVP’s workflow with developing and managing independent production channels. Working as part of a team of experienced underwriters and underwriting assistants across the country, the AVP will be a contributing team player and willing participant in meetings, workshops, and events. The role is responsible for producing, underwriting, and retaining profitable business for the company. The AVP will effectively handle an impactful flow of new and renewal accounts within the division’s guidelines and appetite, including tough products, habitational, commercial contractors, hospitality, and other miscellaneous casualty; additionally, excess construction project business including wrap-ups, project specifics, and owners interest for medium-large commercial and residential construction projects. The AVP will also be responsible for marketing Ambridge Excess Casualty products and developing and strengthening wholesale broker relationships.

  • Advising clients on policy coverages and policy contract wording.
  • Establishing and maintaining knowledge of internal controls and all procedures relating to underwriting.
  • Identifying and raising issues with in-force accounts / risks.
  • Liaising with a variety of other disciplines including claims, legal and/or loss control on issues.
  • Recommending solutions to ensure risks are mitigated or referred to management.
  • Carrying out research on specific accounts as appropriate.
  • Marketing and broker development - with team members and individually.
  • Potential travel and dinners / entertainment in evenings.
  • Traveling to and participating/leading client meetings.
  • Using judgement on how best to balance costs with business needs.
  • Maintaining key client relationships critical to the on-going success of the business.
  • Encouraging dialogue with other market practitioners to gain the benefit of market information.
  • Identifying exposure to loss and recommending appropriate pricing and coverages.
  • Participating, as needed, in interviewing, hiring, training, and development of additional staff.
  • Working with MD and SVP on identifying areas of improvement, creating efficiencies and improving margins.
  • Contributing to the research and development of new business.
  • Contributing to preparation of data for inclusion in the company report and accounts.
  • Working Remote in an effective workspace and prioritizing work during working hours.
  • Efficiently qualifying risks.
  • Gathering necessary information to create clear and appropriately thorough referrals - to include the opportunity, risk analysis, pricing and terms, and suggested action.
  • Responsible for the appropriate recording of risk, premiums, claims exposures and aggregates so as to enable timely reporting of all relevant information to the syndicate, board and regulatory bodies.
  • Participating and presenting own risks written at Peer Review meetings to articulate analytical approach to underwriting decisions.

Responsibilities
