About The Position

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) has an immediate opening for a full-time position of Assistant Vice President for Information Technology (AVPI-T). The AVP-IT is a senior leadership position responsible for assisting the Vice President for Information Technology (VP-IT) in the strategic planning, development, and implementation of information technology initiatives. The AVP-IT collaborates closely with executive leadership, while providing leadership and oversight for enterprise technology initiatives, operational excellence, information security, digital transformation, infrastructure modernization, customer support, and technology governance. This position collaborates with academic and administrative leaders to ensure technology services support Hampton University's mission of promoting learning, innovation, research, leadership, and service. The AVP IT helps develop and implement technology strategies that enhance the student, faculty, staff, and stakeholder experience while advancing institutional goals.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive IT leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of senior management experience leading enterprise technology organizations.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team to achieve common goals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels of the university and especially within DoIT.
  • Deep understanding of IT infrastructure, systems, and applications, with hands-on experience in implementing and managing enterprise-level IT solutions.
  • Experience in project management methodologies, such as Agile or Waterfall, and proficiency in project management tools and techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles and best practices, with experience in developing and implementing IT security strategies and protocols.
  • Experience in higher education technology leadership.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, PMP, or ITIL
  • System admin and server virtualization experience.
  • Disaster recovery planning and hardening of systems experience/knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily management oversight of IT operations.
  • Work with staff as needed to resolve IT issues in a timely fashion.
  • Assist the VP-IT in developing and executing the university’s IT strategic plan, aligning IT initiatives with business goals and objectives.
  • Translate institutional priorities into technology initiatives and measurable outcomes.
  • Assist the VP-IT in providing leadership and assistance to the directors of the various Division of Information Technology service units, including setting goals, and prioritizing projects.
  • Assist the VP-IT to oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of IT projects, ensuring that they are completed on time, within budget, and according to user requirements.
  • Identify emerging technologies and trends that can drive innovation and improve operational efficiency within the university. Artificial Intelligence is a crucial component of this operational efficiency portfolio.
  • Ensure the availability, reliability, scalability, and performance of university technology resources.
  • Build strong relationships with executive leadership, department heads, and stakeholders to understand their technology needs and priorities.
  • Develop and implement IT policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance, security, and effective IT governance.
  • Working with the IT security team and relevant university offices, assess and mitigate IT-related risks, including cybersecurity threats, data breaches, and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinate with appropriate service units to ensure all IT auditor reports and inquiries are developed and submitted accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Assist the VP-IT in the development and management of IT budget, monitoring expenditures and optimizing resource allocation to maximize return on investment.
  • Manage inventory of IT assets and work with the university inventory management to account for all investments made in DoIT.
  • Oversee contract negotiations and technology procurement activities.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of IT operations and services.
  • Other duties as assigned by VP-IT.
