About The Position

Under the supervision of the Tribal Attorney, performs legal representation, research, and legal writing. Types, edits, proofs, and drafts legal documents. This low-key law office responds to a high volume of complex, difficult and ever-changing legal issues, many of which have strict deadlines. We take pride in our ability to address these issues in a friendly, humorous and cooperative way. Candidates should enjoy interpersonal challenges and computer work.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from accredited law school required.
  • Member of Oregon State Bar in good standing.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts with clarity, respect and humor.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point and one or more online legal research tools, such as Westlaw, required.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have experience independently managing multiple priorities in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Current and valid Oregon driver’s license in good standing is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strengths in team building, and cooperative problem solving.
  • Ability to consistently convey a pleasant and helpful attitude by using excellent interpersonal and communication skills to control sometimes stressful and emotional situations.

  • Exhibit a level of computer literacy sufficient to use software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases to produce correspondence, documents, and reports.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and objectivity under constant pressure and crisis situations.

  • Experience working in Tribal government is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs legal representation, negotiations, research, writing, and policy development.
  • Represents the Tribe and its associated entities and committees.
  • Prepares letters, memos, contracts, and legal documents, including pleadings, subpoenas, ordinances, and resolutions.
  • Advises Tribal departments and Tribal entities regarding legal matters.
  • Reviews contracts, deeds, and other legal documents as they are received in the Legal department.
  • Assists Tribal Attorney with complex legal research projects.
  • Proofreads written materials.
  • Assists with planning Legal department projects and activities.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
