About The Position

YWCA Lancaster is looking for a full-time Assistant Teacher, who is an integral part of our team. This position involves caring for children within the context of the YWCA of Lancaster Child Care Manual and DPW Child Care regulations. The Assistant Teacher will prepare a suitable physical and nurturing environment for all children to foster their physical, emotional, and intellectual growth. Maintaining appropriate interactions with children, parents, and staff, as well as fostering a positive atmosphere within the classroom and actively engaging with children are key aspects of this role. The Assistant Teacher will also stay familiar with YWCA of Lancaster policies and procedures, Child Care manual procedures, and Keystone Stars requirements to ensure program quality, and enforce center policies with parents and children. Flexibility regarding staffing needs is essential, as the Assistant Teacher may be assigned to any classroom or center and will be required to cover breaks and staff absences to maintain required child-to-staff ratios. Staff may be required to stay past their shift to maintain ratios, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Respect for children and their parents, as well as a belief in the individuality of each child.
  • Candidates must possess the desire and ability to embody the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.
  • High School diploma or GED
  • 2,500 hours of childcare experience is required.
  • Must be able to lift 45 lbs. and have movement ability to sit, stand, crawl, climb, lift overhead, bend and move from sitting position on floor to standing position.
  • Attend a minimum of 12 hours of training per year.
  • Working cooperatively with other YWCA Childcare programs.
  • Advocating for Early Childhood Education programs in the state of Pennsylvania.
  • Attending staff meetings.
  • Uphold and demonstrate to all staff, students, parents, and children the YWCA mission.
  • Participate in at least one mission related activity a year.

Responsibilities

  • Caring for children within the context of the YWCA of Lancaster Child Care Manual and DPW Child Care regulations.
  • Preparing suitable physical and nurturing environment for ALL children so that they may grow physically, emotionally, and intellectually.
  • Maintaining appropriate interactions with children, parents, and staff.
  • Maintaining a positive atmosphere within the classroom, as well as actively engaging with children to support their mental, physical, and emotional growth.
  • Working cooperatively with the Center Director, staff, and other YWCA employees.
  • Staying familiar with YWCA of Lancaster policies and procedures, Child Care manual procedures and Keystone Stars requirements to ensure program quality.
  • Enforcing center policies with parents and children.
  • Practicing flexibility regarding the staffing needs of the center.
  • Assist in any/all classrooms or center that are assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Cover breaks when assigned, and cover in classrooms during staff absences.
  • Ensure ratio must always be maintained. Staff will be required to stay past the end of their shift if necessary to maintain ratios.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
