About The Position

The Lakeland Hills Family YMCA is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and dedicated Assistant Swim Team Coach to support the development of swimmers of all ages and skill levels. This role works closely with the Head Coach to provide high-quality instruction, foster athlete growth, and create a positive team environment that promotes confidence, sportsmanship, and excellence both in and out of the pool. The Assistant Swim Team Coach supports the Head Coach in planning and leading practices, swim meets, and team activities. The Assistant Coach teaches proper swimming techniques, develops athletes' skills and confidence, reinforces teamwork and sportsmanship, and helps maintain a safe, encouraging, and inclusive atmosphere. This role provides individualized coaching, motivates swimmers to achieve personal and team goals, communicates effectively with athletes and families, and ensures adherence to YMCA policies and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Previous coaching experience with youth sports, swim teams, or a strong background in competitive swimming.
  • Knowledge of competitive swimming techniques and training principles.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certifications promptly upon hire.
  • Ability to successfully complete YMCA-required background screenings.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior YMCA swim coaching experience.
  • Experience with USA Swimming and/or YMCA competitive swim meet operations.
  • Lifeguard certification.
  • Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification (or YMCA equivalent).
  • Familiarity with SportsEngine and other team management platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and conducting age-appropriate swim practices aligned with team and YMCA philosophies.
  • Teach stroke technique, race strategies, training principles, and sportsmanship.
  • Provide constructive feedback and individualized instruction to swimmers.
  • Support meet-day operations, including warm-ups, race preparation, athlete support, and post-race feedback.
  • Help establish and communicate individual and team goals.
  • Contribute to seasonal training plans and athlete development strategies.
  • Create a positive, motivating, and inclusive team culture.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of meet sign-ups, substitutions, absences, and point adjustments.
  • Communicate effectively with swimmers, parents, coaching staff, and YMCA leadership.
  • Coordinate with YMCA administration regarding roster updates, registration periods, account issues, and team communications.
  • Enforce all YMCA, facility, and team safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain required certifications and participate in required training.
  • Assist with incident reporting and risk management procedures when necessary.
  • Protect member confidentiality and handle information in accordance with YMCA policies.
