About The Position

The Assistant Swim Coach provides a superior experience to members and program participants by assisting in leading the swim team program in a safe and effective manner. The Assistant Coach will respond to member and guest needs, provide customer service, and maintain a safe aquatics environment.

Requirements

  • 15 years of age and have high school diploma or equivalent
  • Current lifeguard certification
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Oxygen certifications
  • Proficient in swimming and safety skills
  • Able to teach and communicate aquatics skills to participants.
  • Able to communicate and enforce policies and procedures to members, program participants, and guests.
  • Able to react quickly and properly in emergency situations.
  • Must have enthusiasm and possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Maintain CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer yearly
  • Maintain YMCA Lifeguard Certification every 2 years
  • Maintain First Aid and Administering Bloodbourne Pathogens/Child Abuse Prevention every year
  • Mentally alert to dangerous situations to assure the safety of all swimmers.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR, Oxygen and First Aid effectively.
  • Able to physically stand and sit for an extended period of time.
  • Physically able to see, hear, and communicate clearly and be able to hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment.
  • Able to read, write and perform basic math.
  • Swim with proficiency and endurance for possible rescues.
  • Able to communicate clearly with swimmers, parents and staff using Listen First skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in coaching 11 & Unders in swim practice.
  • Greet and welcome participants each day.
  • Assist with multiple practice groups when needed.
  • Write workouts for 11 & Under age groups.
  • Provide a balance of fun and tough in daily workouts.
  • Provide timely and accurate feedback to participants (or parents) about their progress and skills they need to work on.
  • Encourage swimmers in and out of the pool.
  • Consult with Head Swim Team Coach to ensure participants are incorporating new skills and drills.
  • Communicate with parents on progress and encourage meet and program participation.
  • Wear required uniform to convey a professional appearance.
  • Provide excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.
  • Handle and resolve concerns and inform supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
  • Ensure all equipment is returned to its appropriate area, leaving the area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintain required instructional certifications.
  • Attend mandatory swim meets, meetings, and in-services.
  • Report to work on time and consistently.
  • Exemplify YMCA character values.
  • Maintain positive relations with members, participants, and co-workers.
  • Assist in all areas of Y operation as requested by management.
