About The Position

Help Young Swimmers Build Skills, Confidence, and a Love for the Sport! As an Assistant Swim Coach, you’ll help create a safe, encouraging, and competitive environment where swimmers can grow both in and out of the pool. You’ll support the Head Coach in leading engaging practices, developing individual skills, preparing athletes for swim meets, and promoting the YMCA’s Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Requirements

  • Successful experience as a Swim Team Coach or relevant competitive swimming experience
  • Current CPR/AED and Standard First Aid certifications
  • Current Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification
  • Knowledge of coaching principles, swimmer eligibility requirements, and applicable league rules
  • Ability to work practices, swim meets, and other scheduled team events
  • Maintain active supervision of swimmers and prioritize safety at all times
  • Remain alert to potential hazards in and around pool, practice, and swim-meet areas
  • Communicate effectively with swimmers and provide clear, constructive instruction
  • Educate swimmers on safety expectations and risk factors related to the sport
  • Support a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful team environment
  • Maintain a professional appearance, positive attitude, and helpful approach
  • Be punctual, dependable, and prepared for all scheduled practices, swim meets, meetings, and appointments
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance
  • Follow all YMCA policies related to child safety, professional boundaries, and abuse risk management
  • Complete required annual abuse risk management training
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behavior, policy violations, and concerns in accordance with YMCA procedures and mandated reporting requirements

  • Lifeguard certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Swim Coach with developing and maintaining a competitive youth swim program
  • Lead organized, engaging, and age-appropriate swim practices
  • Provide individualized instruction based on each swimmer’s skills, abilities, and experience
  • Teach and model proper workout routines, warm-up procedures, water entries, racing starts, and competitive swimming techniques
  • Directly supervise swimmers during practices, swim meets, and team activities
  • Help prepare swimmers for competitive swim meets and support fair, positive experiences for athletes at all ability levels
  • Communicate practice schedules, swim-meet information, and other important updates to swimmers and families
  • Recruit swimmers and support the continued growth of the swim team
  • Help coordinate team events and recognize individual and team accomplishments
  • Promote YMCA aquatics programs and support the overall success of the aquatics department
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Swim Coach and/or Aquatics Director
