About The Position

Under the guidance of the Project Superintendent and in partnership with the Project Manager, assists with the management of field operations for the delivery of a project through final completion and closeout. The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for supporting direction in the field, in alignment with Abbott’s core values, in terms that are clearly established on a job-by-job basis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience preferably in commercial construction.
  • 5+ years of experience in related construction sector.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of construction processes.
  • Knowledge of building codes and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of subcontractors’ scopes of work and quality requirements.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Has strong problem-solving skills, showing the ability to deal with a variety of variables given general construction, moderate structure and direction, and interprets a variety of complex instructions.
  • The ability to process information quickly and follow through with a course of action.
  • Has experience using project management software and ability to learn new technological programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Two to three year’s prior field experience in commercial construction preferred.
  • Craft skills in building trades or equipment operation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Champions “The Abbott Way” by delivering predictable outcomes for internal teams, external teams, and customers.
  • Ensures that “Built True – Built Together” is delivered by working with honesty, unity, safety, and quality of work.
  • Review Prime Contract & Subcontract plans and specifications to have a comprehensive knowledge of job requirements.
  • Assist with development of project plan, including schedule, access, resources, building requirements, etc.
  • Procure tools, labor and some materials.
  • Interact with trade partners, architects and owners to resolve issues as they occur.
  • Communicate with stakeholders regarding construction issues and progress to supervisory personnel, craft personnel, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Confer with supervisory and engineering personnel and/or inspectors and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction issues and to improve construction methods.
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure that work conforms to specifications and construction schedules and be a champion of Abbott’s Quality360 program.
  • Actively manage the subcontractor team onsite as a primary point of contact.
  • Drive the project schedule in collaboration with the subcontractor team.
  • Manage the project based on progress reports, materials used, costs and adjust work schedules accordingly.
  • Work with Project Manager to prepare the Project Management Plan, and to review and submit RFI’s and submittal information.
  • May track and price extra work tickets, change requests and back charges to cover extra expenses.
  • Understand and enforce all safety policies, practices and procedures. Is empowered as first line supervision to interrupt and engage in any observed unsafe acts. Report unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Safety Manager.
  • Be proficient with CMiC and knowledgeable on the PSMP (Project Safety Management Plan) and associated planning standards and record data input.
  • Demonstrate integrity; maintain professional standards of conduct and ethics; and follow company policies and procedures.
  • Participate actively in team environment and contributes to successful completion of team goals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and can be primary point of contact onsite in the absence of the Project Superintendent.
  • Can be assigned as primary field representative on smaller projects when appropriate.
