About The Position

This position operates nationally and requires relocation. The Assistant Superintendent, under the guidance of the Site Superintendent and in partnership with the Project Manager, develops, manages, and completes a job plan for an assigned job. This role champions "The Layton Way" by delivering predictable outcomes and ensures "Constructing with Integrity" through honesty, unity, safety, and quality of work. Responsibilities include reviewing plans and specifications, developing job plans (schedule, access, manpower, building requirements), procuring tools, labor, and some materials, and interacting with architects and owners to resolve job issues. The Assistant Superintendent communicates construction issues and progress to various stakeholders, including supervisory personnel, craft personnel, subcontractors, clients, and the Superintendent. They confer with personnel to resolve construction problems and improve methods, inspect work in progress, manage the project based on progress reports, and assist the Project Manager in preparing the Project Management Plan. This role may also track and price extra work tickets, change requests, and back charges. Compliance with all safety policies and procedures is mandatory, and unsafe activities must be reported. The Assistant Superintendent demonstrates integrity, maintains professional standards, and participates actively in a team environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in ground-up commercial construction projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction processes.
  • Knowledge of building codes and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of subcontractors’ scopes of work and quality requirements.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, showing the ability to deal with a variety of variables given general construction, moderate structure and direction, and interprets a variety of complex instructions.
  • Ability to process information quickly and follow through with a course of action.
  • Experience using programs such as BIM360 or similar and ability to learn new technological programs.

  • Craft skills in concrete, or other building trades or equipment operation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, manages, and completes a job plan for an assigned job.

  • Ensures that "Constructing with Integrity" is delivered by working with honesty, unity, safety, and quality of work.
  • Reviews plans and specifications to have a comprehensive knowledge of job requirements.
  • Develops job plan, including schedule, access, manpower, building requirements, etc.
  • Procures tools, labor and some materials.
  • Interacts with architects and owners to resolve job issues.
  • Communicates construction issues and progress to supervisory personnel, craft personnel, subcontractors, clients, and the Superintendent.
  • Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel and/or inspectors and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction problems and to improve construction methods.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure that work conforms to specifications and construction schedules.
  • Manages the project based on progress reports, materials used and costs and adjusts work schedules accordingly.
  • Works with Project Manager in preparing the Project Management Plan.
  • May track and price extra work tickets, change requests and back charges to cover extra expenses.
  • Complies with all safety policies, practices and procedures.
  • Reports unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Safety.
  • Demonstrates integrity; maintains professional standards of conduct and ethics; and follows company policies and procedures.
  • Participates actively in team environment and contributes to successful completion of team goals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
