About The Position

Austin Commercial is seeking an Assistant Superintendent for a multi-billion dollar project with our Phoenix, AZ Division. The Assistant Superintendent I assists the superintendent in day-to-day field construction activities, taking charge of specific construction activities and/or supervising various crafts. Night Shift availability is preferred.

Requirements

  • B.S. in construction management/science, engineering, or related field and 2+ years of commercial construction experience OR, in lieu of a college degree, 6+ years of commercial construction trade experience.
  • Successful completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training required (may obtain within the first year of employment).

Responsibilities

  • Assists the superintendent in reviewing record documents, submittals, shop drawings, and schematics to determine project scope, materials, manpower requirements, and equipment needs.
  • Assists the superintendent and project manager in planning the jobsite layout, initiating startup activities (site security, trailer placement, utility hookups), and designating storage areas, parking, and equipment placement.
  • Directs field engineers in jobsite survey and layout, ensuring dimensional control lines and elevations are correct and verified by third-party surveyors before foundation work.
  • Plans daily and weekly craft activities with detailed schedule forecasts, providing technical instructions to foremen regarding work, methods, manpower, and completion dates.
  • Works with project office staff to resolve ambiguities in plans and drawings before construction.
  • Oversees the overall safety of the jobsite, implementing safety plans and procedures.
  • Orders self-performed building materials, supplies, and small tools from approved suppliers.
  • Inspects all field construction work in progress, including subcontracted work, ensuring high-quality workmanship and promptly addressing and correcting deficiencies.
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance in resolving daily construction problems, investigating alternative work methods and materials for efficiency and quality improvements.
  • Monitors weekly labor costs for accuracy and conformance with budget, taking corrective action to improve productivity when costs exceed norms.
  • Investigates reasons for construction schedule delays and adjusts leadership, crew sizes, equipment, and other factors as necessary.
  • Monitors equipment use, maintenance, and cost throughout the project.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and codes related to construction activities.
  • Manages the scheduling of all governmental inspections required for a certificate of occupancy.
  • Administers the company Safety & Health Manual, assuming responsibility for employee health and safety, including first aid areas, emergency treatment facilities, accompanying OSHA inspectors, and correcting safety hazards.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with owners, owner representatives, architects, consulting firms, and other parties with a financial interest in the project, resolving problems through direct negotiation.
  • Performs tasks associated with project completion, including close-out punch lists, demobilization, and as-built documents.
  • Maintains a detailed and accurate daily report of all field construction activities.
