About The Position

To manage store operations to achieve maximum sales and profit while maintaining optimum store conditions. This role involves ensuring every customer receives prompt, courteous, and friendly service, and achieving sales, profit, expense, and labor budgets. The Assistant Store Manager will work with Department Managers to achieve budgeted inventory levels and performance standards. This position also includes managing merchandise ordering, receiving, and handling, as well as store opening and closing procedures. Maintaining new and discontinued items programs, ensuring outstanding store condition, and implementing effective security and safety programs are key aspects of this role. The Assistant Store Manager will also oversee the proper handling of DSD products, ensure accurate pricing and front-end system updates, and supervise the training and scheduling of personnel to provide prompt and accurate service. They will also participate in store meetings to discuss merchandising, sales planning, and operational issues, and will be involved in the selection, hiring, and training of store employees. Regular store walks to identify and communicate needs to Department Managers are also required.

Requirements

  • Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
  • The ability to read and write English; able to read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, numbers, reports printed paper and forms.
  • Make decisions concerning: the placement of merchandise on the shelf/display, pricing, allocation of shelf space, employee scheduling, expense control, order of product/supplies, hiring/supervision of employees, merchandising plans, departments operational policies and procedures and the sales/promotion of merchandise.
  • Good interpersonal communications.
  • Knowledge of regulations/laws that would apply to operation of the business: Wage & Hour, Family Medical Leave Act, OSHA, ADA, EEO, Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, Nutrition Labeling & Education Act, Weights and Measures etc.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Manage the store to ensure every customer receives prompt, courteous, and friendly service.
  • Attain sales, profit, expense, and labor budgets.
  • Work with Department Managers to achieve budgeted inventory levels for each department.
  • Work with Department Managers to achieve the standards of performance and productivity for each department.
  • Complete/review reports including shrink, productivity, ad markdown, DSD price changes, display performance, out-of-stocks, safety store audit, transfers, credits, and reclaim.
  • Perform/direct the ordering of merchandise and supplies on schedule from the warehouse and authorized vendors.
  • Perform/direct the receiving and handling of merchandise and supplies.
  • Perform/direct all store opening and store closing procedures.
  • Maintain the new items and discontinued items program on a weekly basis.
  • Maintain an outstanding store condition program, including floors, windows, shelving, and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain effective back door and front-end security procedures, including enforcement of store employee purchase policies.
  • Maintain an effective store safety and fire prevention program.
  • Direct, through proper supervision, that all DSD products are authorized, checked in properly, recorded in DSD System/Price Book, and SRP update on the front-end systems.
  • Assure, through proper supervision, that all merchandise is checked out through the front end at the correct price.
  • Assure, through proper supervision, that all price changes are properly completed on the front-end system and shelf tags.
  • Assure prompt and accurate service at the front end and service departments by properly supervising the training and scheduling of personnel.
  • Ensure all customer requests and/or complaints are handled with courtesy.
  • In conjunction with the Store Manager, conduct store meetings to review merchandising, sales planning, and operating problems.
  • Keep employees informed about matters concerning them on their job.
  • Perform/supervise selection, hiring, and training of store employees.
  • Make effective use of available training programs and materials.
  • In conjunction with the Store Managers, determine the needs in the store by performing a store walk, at minimum daily, to include the backroom.
  • Communicate the needs of each area (department) of the store to Department Managers.
  • Perform the same Tasks of the Job as any employee while substituting as part of the work crew or as part of the training program for new employees.
