About The Position

The Assistant Store Manager supports the overall operation, performance, and profitability of the branch by assisting with daily management, team leadership, customer service, inventory control, and sales execution. Working closely with the Store Manager, this role helps drive operational excellence, sales growth, and employee development while ensuring the branch delivers an exceptional customer experience. The Assistant Store Manager is a hands-on leader who promotes a safe, organized, and customer-focused environment while supporting the achievement of branch goals and business objectives.

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive leadership experience in retail, building materials, distribution, or related industries.

  • Work is performed in retail, warehouse, showroom, and yard environments.
  • Frequent interaction with employees, customers, contractors, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform physical tasks throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and handle materials as needed (up to 50 pounds).
  • Ability to work extended hours, including evenings or weekends, based on business needs.
  • Comfortable working in both office and operational environments, including warehouse and yard areas.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous Assistant Store Manager, Store Manager, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience with inventory management, merchandising, sales operations, and customer service.
  • Experience preparing estimates, material take-offs, or supporting contractor sales is preferred.
  • Construction, lumber, building materials, or industrial distribution experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of branch operations, sales planning, and operational reporting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the daily operation of the branch to ensure efficiency, organization, and compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Assist in leading day-to-day branch activities while maintaining high operational standards.
  • Help maintain an organized store layout and efficient workflow to support customers and employees.
  • Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Support execution of branch initiatives and operational improvement projects.
  • Communicate sales goals, operational objectives, and performance expectations to team members.
  • Assist the Store Manager in achieving branch sales, profitability, and customer satisfaction goals.
  • Assume leadership responsibilities during the Store Manager's absence.
  • Support sales initiatives that drive revenue growth and profitability.
  • Assist with customer estimates, material take-offs, quotations, and sales support activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with contractors, builders, homeowners, commercial customers, and vendors.
  • Identify opportunities to develop new customer relationships and expand existing accounts.
  • Ensure a high level of customer service by responding promptly to customer inquiries and resolving issues professionally.
  • Promote company products, services, and value-added solutions.
  • Support the Inside Sales team in achieving sales goals and customer service objectives.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training team members.
  • Coach, motivate, and develop employees to improve individual and team performance.
  • Establish clear expectations and help hold team members accountable for achieving operational and customer service goals.
  • Support performance reviews, coaching conversations, and employee development planning.

  • Ensure merchandising, displays, and product presentation support sales and operational objectives.
  • Help maintain an organized, clean, and efficient warehouse, showroom, and yard environment.
  • Assist in executing branch-level business plans designed to achieve sales, profitability, and operational targets.
  • Collaborate with Store Manager to develop strategies based on market trends, customer needs, and operational performance.
  • Monitor key operational metrics and recommend improvements.
  • Support implementation of new business initiatives and operational best practices.
  • Maintain accurate operational records, reports, and documentation.
  • Promote and enforce company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and operational procedures.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and identify opportunities to improve workplace safety.
  • Ensure employees receive required safety training and utilize appropriate PPE.
  • Support compliance with company operational standards and inventory control procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment for employees and customers.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
