About The Position

Meijer is seeking an Assistant Store Director for its Champaign, Illinois store. The role provides direction for store operations, processes, and conditions, and plans, directs, and supervises the team’s day-to-day work. The Assistant Store Director supports overall operations across food and general merchandise, including merchandising plans, seasonal resets, and endcaps, and is responsible for store operations when the Store Director is absent. The role leads the selection, training, development, and performance management of team members and leaders. It promotes an inclusive, engaged team culture, clear communication, and effective recruiting and staffing. The Assistant Store Director assesses financial results and executes business strategies to improve customer service, sales, profitability, and other key performance metrics. The position also supports food safety, product freshness, daily delivery and backroom execution, merchandising, and community relationships, while keeping the store competitive and aligned with Meijer and local standards.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
At least 5 years of retail, grocery, operations management, or customer service experience.
At least 4 years of progressive leadership experience.
Passion for leading team members while providing industry-leading service.
Proactive and creative thinking applied to business needs.
Thorough understanding of seasonal and diverse merchandising to meet customer and community needs and grow sales and market share.
Strong business acumen.
Commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where team members and vendors feel valued and supported.

Responsibilities

Assist the Store Director with overall store operations and take responsibility for store operations in the Store Director’s absence.
Direct and supervise day-to-day store operations across food and general merchandise.
Manage store planograms, seasonal resets, endcaps, ordering, weekly ad sets, seasonal assortments, displays, and pricing in accordance with company merchandising plans.
Select, train, develop, and retain team members and leaders; lead performance management, including performance ratings, career development, and promotion potential.
Forecast staffing needs and develop recruiting strategies to maintain appropriate staffing.
Foster team member engagement, inclusion, and open communication; lead daily huddles covering financial results, customer feedback, recognition, and other important information.
Assess store financial results and execute strategies to improve profitability and performance.
Deliver on sales, shrink, labor, margin, total direct contribution, net profit, customer satisfaction, and safety metrics.
Improve customer service, address customer complaints effectively, and ensure quick and efficient service.
Ensure products and displays are merchandised to maximize sales and profitability and meet product freshness standards.
Verify store operations comply with Meijer and local food safety standards and follow required processes and procedures.
Lead new implementations and initiatives identified by store operations.
Monitor the macro environment, customer needs, and competitor trends, and develop strategies to keep the store competitive.
Support daily direct-store-delivery execution, backroom standards, and salesfloor excellence.
Build relationships with local communities and customers to support the Meijer brand.
Perform other duties as assigned or required.
