About The Position

The Office of State Archaeology (OSA) coordinates and implements a statewide program of prehistoric, historic, and underwater archaeology. The OSA is part of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. The OSA serves as the professional archaeology staff for the State Historic Preservation Office and the NC Historical Commission. Legal and professional responsibilities include archaeological resource protection, archaeological collections, data, and records management, public education, environmental review, grants administration, and technical assistance for the public and other government agencies. This 3-year, National Park Service HPF grant-funded Archaeologist II position provides professional, technical, and administrative services to the Office of State Archaeology.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in North American archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution AND four years of archaeological experience; OR a bachelor's degree in North American archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution AND six years of archaeological experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be available to work the schedule of Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm.
  • Must be able to participate in archaeological field investigations by walking through rough and uneven terrain and working in unfavorable weather conditions including exposure to noise, dust, animals, and insects.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds often with or without accommodation.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • A graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field
  • Cumulative one or more years of experience or specialized training in archaeological research, administration, or management
  • Cumulative four or more months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology
  • Cumulative one or more years of experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the prehistoric or historic period
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion

Responsibilities

  • Environmental Review – review of complex project plans and technical archaeological reports for counties impacted by Tropical Storm Helene, including consultation with government agencies, developers, and contractors.
  • Geographic Information System (GIS)– map site locations and manage other spatial data layers in the OSA’s GIS database; import shapefiles for archaeological sites and surveyed areas.
  • Technical Assistance and Public Education – assist archaeological consultants with access to OSA files and respond to requests from the public for information, artifact identifications, and technical assistance.
