About The Position

The Assistant Head Coach's primary goal is to develop young people to their maximum potential, both physically and mentally. This involves teaching competition, discipline, and sportsmanship to foster a program that brings pride to participants, parents, coaches, officials, and the community. The role involves supervising assistant coaches and students within the program, promoting cooperation among staff, and acting as a professional leader for young people. Responsibilities include managing team conduct, developing participation rules, coordinating programs for grades 7-12, overseeing purchasing and inventory, ensuring athlete eligibility, and providing strict supervision of athletes. The coach will also assist in recruitment, selection, and assignment of coaches, ensure athletes meet participation requirements (physical exams, parental consent, insurance), manage team schedules, assist with budget preparation, follow award policies, help maintain facilities, and avoid conflicting employment. Continuous skill improvement through observation, reading, and attending clinics is expected. The role also involves supporting the district's mission statement and performing other assigned tasks.

Requirements

  • Teaching knowledge of the sport directing.
  • Experience in physical education, coaching, first-aid, CPR, and sports medicine.
  • High moral values.
  • Proven leadership capabilities.
  • Class A Certification in a teaching field preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively with parents/community or employees of the district.
  • Exhibit qualities of leadership and organizational ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes a spirit of cooperation between all coaches, their principals, and the athletic director.
  • Conducts himself/herself as a professional leader of young people by respecting parents, peers, school officials, and the community.
  • Accepts the responsibility for the team’s dress, action and behavior at games, practice, on trips, and in the locker room.
  • Develops rules and regulations governing participation in the sport.
  • Coordinated a program for grades 7-12 in a particular sport.
  • Supervises purchasing for the sport, being sure to follow correct purchasing and budgetary procedures.
  • Collects and inventories all equipment and supplies immediately after the close of the season.
  • Accepts responsibility for checking the eligibility of athletes on the team prior to participation in practice or games.
  • Provides strict supervision of athletes at all times: in the locker room, at practice, at games and on the bus to and from games.
  • Turns in complete roster of all participants to the principals and athletic director.
  • Participates with the principal and athletic director in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of coaches in the program, with principal having the final authority for selecting and recommending coaches to the superintendent.
  • Requires all participants to: have physical examinations; have a parental consent form signed and on file; and have insurance or signed statements of coverage.
  • Supervises the scheduling program for all teams in the program and submits final schedules to the athletic director for approval.
  • Assists the athletic director in preparing a budget for the program.
  • Follows policy on awarding letters to participants
  • Assists in maintaining and upgrading facilities and grounds utilized by their program.
  • Does not hold other jobs or perform other duties that conflict with practices or games.
  • Seeks to improve skills by observing other coaches, reading, and attending clinics, or workshops.
  • Occasionally oversees and/or assists with field maintenance.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the district’s mission statement and provides support in teaching and inspiring all students to continually pursue knowledge, achieve their aspirations and make positive contributions in a changing world.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the principal or athletic director.
