About The Position

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time, Assistant Scientist to work in Miami. The Assistant Scientist, SOM carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University’s research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field. The Assistant Scientist will conduct and support preclinical research related to the development and evaluation of microbiome-based therapeutic strategies for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and cancer treatment-related toxicities. Responsibilities will include planning and performing experiments using established in vitro and in vivo models; conducting molecular and cellular assays; collecting, processing, and analyzing biological specimens; and assisting with evaluation of inflammatory, intestinal barrier, metabolomic, and pain-related endpoints. The Assistant Scientist will participate in studies evaluating engineered E. coli Nissle strains designed to restore microbiome-derived metabolites, including GABA and butyrate, and determine their effects on chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. The position will contribute to experimental design, data collection, statistical interpretation, preparation of figures and manuscripts, and presentation of research findings. Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate laboratory records, assisting with research regulatory compliance, coordinating experiments with collaborating investigators and core facilities, contributing to preparation of scientific reports and grant applications, and assisting with supervision and training of junior laboratory personnel and students. The Assistant Scientist will work under the direction of Dr. Sabita Roy and collaborate with members of the Department of Surgery research team to accomplish the objectives and milestones of the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund–supported project.

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree - Philosophy (PhD) required
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
  • Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
  • Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.
  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s)
  • Uses the internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
