About The Position

This posting is for an Engineer I that will serve as the Assistant Resident Engineer at the Ahoskie Construction Office in Division One. The position will perform various duties related to the management of construction projects, including supervising technicians, responding to public inquiries, coordinating with contractors, making field engineering decisions, conducting environmental reviews, and performing contract administration. The selected applicant must possess working knowledge of Civil Engineering principles, construction methods, materials, and equipment, as well as the ability to interpret plans, administer contracts, train and supervise employees, and communicate effectively with various stakeholders. The role requires the ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions, and may involve night and weekend work. A valid state driver's license is required to operate a state vehicle, and safety toe shoes are mandatory.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and construction methods, materials and equipment.
  • Ability to understand, explain and administer contracts; interpret construction plans, provisions, standards and specifications.
  • Ability to train, coordinate and supervise subordinate employees.
  • Ability to communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractor’s personnel and the general public.
  • Ability to make Field Engineering Decisions.
  • Ability to perform Contract Administration (estimates, supplemental agreements, claims, correspondence, submittals, monthly construction meetings, ensuring environmental compliance, etc).
  • Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties.
  • Must be able to legally operate a State vehicle.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of construction projects.
  • Directly supervise and provide engineering level support for technicians.
  • Provide prompt public relations response to various inquiries from public, NCDOT officials and other governmental agencies.
  • Conduct daily coordination with Contractor and NCDOT Project Staff.
  • Make field engineering decisions.
  • Conduct environmental reviews and manage erosion control efforts.
  • Performs Contract Administration (estimates, supplemental agreements, claims, correspondence, submittmits, monthly construction meetings, ensures environmental compliance, etc).
  • Monitor and resolve traffic control issues as they occur.
  • Coordinate utility relocations.
  • Review materials test results and initiates penalties, if required, and other duties as assigned.
