About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Ophthalmology is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to perform basic and applied research in glaucoma cell biology, with considerable scope and complexity in which existing theory or methods may be limited or lacking. This individual will also participate in identification and selection of the problems to be studied, the approach to them and the results obtained. Requirements

  • A PhD, MD, or MD/PHD with training in cell biology or genetics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated by peer reviewed publications.
  • Minimum of 3 years post-doctoral experience.
  • In depth knowledge of aqueous humor dynamics.
  • In depth expertise in confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.
  • Applied expertise with optical coherence tomography and electroretinography.
  • Experience with proteomic analysis, including OCT and electroretinography.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ocular biology.
  • Experience with ex vivo eye models.
  • Experience with ophthalmic examinations in patients.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate mechanisms of trabecular meshwork dysfunction and regeneration in glaucoma.
  • Perform a variety of laboratory techniques, including cell culture, histochemistry and molecular evaluations of ocular tissue.
  • Review and analyze clinical notes, particularly those related to ophthalmic procedures and treatment.
  • Prepare reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Assist P.I. in writing grant applications.
  • Participate in determining research priorities and planning programs of research.
  • Maintain safety records, ensure regulatory compliance in laboratory.
  • Train students and support staff.
