About The Position

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State is seeking an Assistant Research Professor to collaborate with Professor Jimmy DeLaunay and other researchers. The successful candidate will contribute to the Fermi GBM and Swift-BAT GUANO teams, focusing on the real-time and archival search for hard X-ray to gamma-ray transients using data from the Fermi and Swift missions. This role also involves conducting multi-messenger and transient population studies. Key research activities include enhancing transient search pipelines, analyzing extensive datasets, classifying transients, performing in-depth investigations of newly discovered transients, and publishing scientific findings. Penn State offers a rich research environment with the Swift Mission Operation Center, a strong community of high-energy transient researchers, and the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos, including its Center for Multimessenger Astrophysics with affiliations to experiments like LIGO, IceCube, and HAWC.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field.
  • At least three years of experience in postdoctoral research.
