About The Position

The Georgia Public Defender Council is seeking an Assistant Public Defender 3 or 4 for the Specialized Division. This role involves providing competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients, handling cases of routine to moderate complexity, and representing clients in serious, high-profile, and significant felony cases, including those requiring advanced legal knowledge and strong advocacy skills. The employee will primarily work from home but will have access to office space and administrative assistance. The position serves at the pleasure of the Executive Director.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university.
  • License to practice law in the State of Georgia OR Eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR Reciprocity.
  • Two years of relevant legal experience OR Two years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 2 (LEP021) or Three years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
  • Three years of experience in criminal defense.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge to conduct case research and documentation.
  • Knowledge of statutes, court decisions, federal and state laws, and local criminal laws.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge to investigate and prepare cases for hearings and trials.
  • Ability to plan the work of assigned staff.
  • Makes sound and well-informed decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication.
  • Displays a high level of commitment toward work and a high standard of ethical conduct.
  • Effectively manages own time and that of others with a high level of initiative in accomplishing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.

Responsibilities

  • Provides competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients.
  • Handles cases of routine to moderate complexity.
  • Assigned to serious, high-profile, and significant felony cases.
  • Represents clients in cases including the most serious, complex legal cases assigned to the office, requiring advanced legal knowledge and strong advocacy skills.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Conducts case research and documentation.
  • Investigates and prepares cases for hearings and trials.
  • Plans the work of assigned staff.
