About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an Assistant Project Manager for the Wastewater Capital Program (WWCP) directorate in Queens, NY. This role involves supporting project teams in managing capital projects valued at billions of dollars, focusing on upgrades for sustainability, resiliency, and improvements to the wastewater system. The Assistant Project Manager will ensure project goals and milestones are met, assist with contract modifications, and ensure Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is integrated throughout the project lifecycle. The position requires coordination with various agency bureaus, other city agencies, and stakeholders, as well as monitoring permit requirements, resolving project issues, and managing project quality. Fieldwork, including site surveys and investigations, will be a part of the role, requiring the ability to work in various weather conditions and on uneven surfaces. The selected candidate must demonstrate critical thinking, data analysis, and effective communication skills, with the flexibility to adapt to changing work responsibilities. Extended workdays may be required. This position requires the operation of a motor vehicle for site visits and meetings.

Requirements

  • Only applicants who are permanent Civil Service Project Managers are eligible to apply.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, construction, construction management, construction technology, sustainable design, urban planning, urban studies, city planning, transportation planning, business administration, or public administration, and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in project management work, such as planning, administering, managing, coordinating, or expediting, for engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape architectural projects.
  • OR A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of experience as described in '1' above.
  • OR A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus any combination of the experience and/or college education as described in '1' above to make up the equivalent of five years of education and experience.
  • One year of credit will be given for each 30 semester credits of college education leading to a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, construction, construction management, construction technology, sustainable design, urban planning, urban studies, city planning, transportation planning, business administration, or public administration.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an integral project team member responsible for achievement of project goals and milestones.
  • Ensure that all prepared program schedules, reports, and work products conform to the program scope of work.
  • Support project team in the preparation, negotiation, and processing of appropriate modifications to consultant contract scope, cost, and schedule for successful project completion.
  • Serve as design and construction support staff ensuring that Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is incorporated throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Focus on client service with operating bureaus, implementation of all project delivery procedures and coordination with all BEDC support groups.
  • Develop seamless communication/coordination with agency bureaus, other city agencies, and key stakeholders.
  • Monitor permit requirements.
  • Assist in resolving project issues and risk mitigation to keep the project moving.
  • Manage the quality of project delivery throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Continuously monitor key performance indicators with respect to budget, schedule and contract metrics.
  • Conduct reliable skilled field conditions surveys and prepare accurate reports on physical observations.
  • Actively participate in field investigations to develop alternative approaches and solutions to meet the project objectives.
  • Attend all required environmental compliance and safety related training classes and adhere to all the related regulations.
  • Perform fieldwork that may involve standing and walking on uneven surfaces, steep slopes, and stairs in all weather conditions.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to perform site visits, equipment testing, inspections, and to attend meetings with project stakeholders.
