About The Position

Hernandez Consulting & Construction is seeking an Assistant Project Manager (APM) to support the successful design and construction of a large federal healthcare/residential construction project in New Orleans. This position will work closely with the Construction Manager, design team, general contractor, subcontractors, consultants, and project stakeholders throughout the project. A significant portion of this position will involve construction scheduling, schedule updates, progress tracking, and project controls. The successful candidate must have hands-on experience working with construction schedules and be comfortable gathering information from the project team, updating schedule activities and progress, identifying impacts to critical milestones, and supporting accurate project reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in commercial construction, construction management, project engineering, or a related role.
  • Demonstrated experience working with construction schedules and schedule updates.
  • Understanding of construction sequencing, critical-path activities, milestones, and the relationship between design, procurement, and field construction activities.
  • Experience with RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, change orders, and construction documentation.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or comparable CPM scheduling software.
  • Experience on large commercial, healthcare, institution, or federal construction projects.
  • Experience with federal government or VA projects.
  • Experience with construction project management platforms such as Procore or similar systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other standard project-management tools.
  • Ability to work effectively with the construction manager, superintendents, architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, consultants, and clients.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently working as a Project Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, or Assistant Project Manager and is ready for increased responsibility.
  • Spent several years learning the technical and administrative side of construction project management and have developed strong scheduling and project controls skills.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, comfortable following up with multiple parties, and capable of recognizing when project activities are beginning to affect the overall schedule rather than simply recording progress after the fact.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with development, maintenance, and regular updating of the project’s detailed Critical Path Method (CPM) construction schedule.
  • Collect schedule information and progress updates from the Construction manager, superintendent, general contractor, subcontractors, design team, and other project participants.
  • Update actual start and finish dates, remaining durations, percent complete, milestones, procurement activities, submittits, and other schedule information.
  • Review schedule updates for accuracy and completeness before submission.
  • Monitor critical and near-critical activities and identify potential schedule delays or impacts.
  • Compare current progress against baseline and previous schedule updates and help identify variances.
  • Assist with preparation of schedule narratives, look-ahead schedules, milestone reports, and other project-control reports.
  • Track design, permitting, procurement, construction, commissioning, testing, inspections, owner-furnished equipment, activation, and project closeout activities within the overall project schedule.
  • Maintain organized records supporting schedule updates and changes.
  • Support the Construction Manager in the day-to-day management and administration of the project.
  • Coordinate activities among the owner, architects, engineers, general contractor, subcontractors, consultants, and other project stakeholders.
  • Assist with tracking design deliverables, construction documents, permitting, procurement, construction, commissioning, inspections, and project closeout.
  • Participate in project meetings and prepare and distribute accurate meeting minutes and action-item lists.
  • Maintain and monitor Request for Information (RFIs), submittal logs, change order logs, action item logs, and other project tracking tools.
  • Review project documentation for completeness and followup on outstanding items.
  • Assist with change-order review, pricing documentation, and cost tracking.
  • Monitor contractor and subcontractor performance and follow up on commitments and deadlines.
  • Assist with preparation of monthly project progress reports, including schedule status, percent complete, significant project developments, outstanding issues, and anticipated completion dates.
  • Coordinate with project team members to identify potential issues early and assist in developing solutions.
  • Support project documentation, recordkeeping, and closeout requirements.
  • Perform periodic site visits and participate in construction progress reviews and inspections.
