About The Position

The School of Information at San José State University is seeking an Assistant Professor specializing in Cultural Heritage Informatics, AI/Digital Transformation, and Critical Technology Studies, beginning August 2027. This role particularly welcomes applicants whose research advances Critical Technology Studies, examining how technology influences knowledge production, cultural memory, information access, social equity, democratic participation, and institutional practices. The School of Information prepares professionals in organizing, preserving, analyzing, protecting, teaching, and improving access to information. The faculty member will join a vibrant community with a large global alumni network, diverse student body, fully online graduate programs for working professionals, an ALA-accredited MLIS program, and a focus on access, equity, community service, digital literacy, and ethical technology. The School and University are committed to institutional excellence and advancing equity, serving a diverse student population including many first-generation and Pell Grant recipients, and are designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI). Requirements

  • Earned doctorate in Library and Information Science, Information Studies, Informatics, Archives, Museum Studies, Digital Humanities, Science and Technology Studies, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in cultural heritage collections, archives, libraries, museums, information systems, or related information environments.
  • Evidence of scholarship, teaching, or professional practice related to digital transformation, emerging technologies, or critical technology studies.
  • Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Ability to pursue external funding opportunities.
  • Ability to collaborate with libraries, archives, museums, educational institutions, government agencies, industry partners, and community organizations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success, accessibility, and community-engaged information practice.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, as gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas such as Archives and Records Management, Cultural Heritage Informatics, Critical Technology Studies, Information Ethics and the Social Impacts of AI, and Technology Policy and Governance.
  • Contribute across multiple graduate programs and support the School's tradition of innovative online education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and socially engaged information practice.
  • Teach and collaborate across the School of Information's programs and certificates.
  • Participate in service activities that support the School, University, profession, and broader information community.
  • Participate in shared governance, including department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
  • Comply with mandated reporter requirements under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
  • Complete Clery Act training and report Clery incidents if designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
  • Complete assigned CSU employee training (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety).
  • Comply with safety measures to decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness as required by the President.
