About The Position

The Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a faculty position in quantum physics. The department’s hiring priority is an experimental physicist at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level. The search welcomes outstanding candidates whose research advances the understanding, exploration, or control of quantum systems, with particular interest in quantum matter and quantum many-body phenomena. Areas of interest include strongly correlated quantum matter, quantum materials, quantum magnetism, unconventional superconductivity, topological phenomena, and non-equilibrium quantum dynamics, while remaining open to research that connects existing areas or opens new directions. Exceptionally qualified candidates in theoretical and computational quantum matter and quantum many-body physics are encouraged to contact the search committee Chair to discuss their research interests and vision. Candidates should bring an original scientific vision and the ability to establish or further develop a distinctive, independent research program. The role includes working collaboratively to promote teamwork, equality, and inclusiveness; partnering with colleagues within the College of Natural Sciences and across campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities; and performing other duties in support of the College’s mission and goals. This is a full-time, academic-year, onsite position in Amherst. The schedule varies depending on teaching, research, and service. The expected start date is September 1, 2027. The University expects to pay approximately $79,350–$124,620, with specific pay determined based on relevant factors, including faculty rank and required certifications. The position is subject to final budgetary and administrative approval.
