About The Position

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor whose work may span the full scope of structural engineering and mechanics. Interdisciplinary scholars and candidates working in emerging areas are particularly encouraged. Areas of interest include sustainable, resilient, and adaptive infrastructure systems; applications of AI, big data, and machine learning to civil systems; risk, reliability, and hazard analysis and modeling; large-scale testing; advanced and architected materials and additive manufacturing; and innovative and unconventional structures, including energy infrastructure. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2027; under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may be considered. The successful candidate is expected to establish an externally funded research program in civil engineering, structural engineering, or engineering mechanics and maintain an internationally recognized scholarly presence. They will contribute to teaching existing undergraduate and graduate courses in civil engineering and mechanics and may develop new curricula, including courses supporting the structural engineering and mechanics program. They will also provide meaningful service to the department, College, University, and their field through committees, faculty governance, and other activities supporting the academic community. Other duties may be assigned. The department has 30 full-time tenure-track faculty members, more than 100 graduate students, and approximately 400 undergraduates. Work is performed in a standard office or indoor university environment and involves minimal physical exertion. This is a full-time, academic-year position; the schedule varies according to teaching, research, and service responsibilities. The position is onsite in Amherst and is subject to final budgetary and administrative approval.
