About The Position

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto is seeking applications for a three-year full-time contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in German Language Pedagogy. The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2026. The university is committed to promoting diversity and strongly encourages applications from Black, Indigenous, and other Racialized communities. The role requires a PhD in German Studies, native or near-native German proficiency, and a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate German language courses, manage teaching assistants, coordinate course materials and curriculum delivery, and contribute to departmental administration. Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills are essential.

Requirements

  • Earned a PhD degree in any field of German Studies by the time of the appointment, or shortly thereafter.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.
  • Native or near-native level of German proficiency.
  • Teaching expertise in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience in language course preparation and delivery of innovative second-language teaching in German language classes.
  • Experience in curriculum development.
  • Experience in development of online material/lectures.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent, novel, and impactful pedagogical methods.
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.
  • Experience in the coordination of multi-section language courses at beginners’ and intermediate levels.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate German language courses at all levels.
  • Manage, mentor, and coordinate teaching assistants and course instructors.
  • Stewardship for course materials and curriculum delivery.
  • Responsibility for departmental administration.
  • Serve as coordinator of the German language sequence.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues teaching in undergraduate courses and programs.
