About The Position

The English Department at the University of St. Thomas is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Writing Studies and co-director of the Center for Writing. The ideal candidate will specialize in writing center theory and practice, with potential subspecialties in areas such as inclusive pedagogy, supporting neurodiverse and/or multilingual learners, and the impact of generative AI on writing. The role involves teaching various courses, including first-year literature and writing, a Writing Center Theory & Practice course, and graduate-level courses. A significant aspect of the position is the co-directorship of the Center for Writing, which includes a reduced teaching load. The co-director will eventually assume full directorship upon achieving tenure. The department values creativity, curiosity, versatility, and a commitment to equity, action, and hope in its faculty. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda, advise students, and contribute to departmental and university service.

Requirements

• PhD (U.S. or foreign equivalent degree) in English, Rhetoric/Composition, Writing Studies, or a closely related discipline; alternatively, ABD nearing completion will also be considered.
• Proven record of excellence in undergraduate teaching.
• Demonstrated commitment to an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive learning environment.
• Strong potential for productive research/scholarly activities.
• Ability to maintain an active scholarly agenda.
• Ability to advise undergraduate students.
• Ability to contribute to service to the department, university, and/or greater community.

Nice To Haves

• Specialization in writing center theory and practice.
• Subspecialties including but not limited to writing instruction that supports neurodiverse and/or multilingual learners; inclusive pedagogy; and/or writing in the context of generative AI.

Responsibilities

• Teach first-year literature and writing courses in the English core curriculum.
• Teach a Writing Center Theory & Practice undergraduate course for student consultants.
• Teach a Teaching College English graduate course.
• Teach other courses in the undergraduate and MA program in English based on candidate's specialties.
• Co-direct the university's Center for Writing for an initial three-year term.
• Assume full responsibility as Director of the Center for Writing upon receiving tenure and promotion (or potentially pre-tenure with approval).
• Maintain an active scholarly agenda.
• Engage with student academic advising.
• Perform service to the department, university, and community.
