About The Position

The Department of Theatre in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre to start in August 2027. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment. Summer appointments are possible, depending upon funding and enrollment. We seek a candidate with expertise in Theatrical Voice and Speech, as well as the potential for or record of a strong and developing national reputation achieved through compelling research and/or creative record. Candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. This is an in-person position. Most university classes are offered face-to-face, and extensive in-person engagement in such activities as office hours, student advising, and departmental, college, and university committee meetings is essential to advancing student success and departmental effectiveness. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others. The Department of Theatre combines the breadth of a liberal arts education with the rigor of professional artistic training. Students engage deeply with theatre as both an academic discipline and a collaborative art form while working closely with expert faculty mentors in the classroom, studio, and production environment. Undergraduate students benefit from a broad educational foundation and have opportunities for intensive pre-professional training, while graduate students pursue advanced professional development and creative research. Undergraduate Concentrations: Performance, Design and Technology, Drama Education, Theatre Studies; Graduate Degrees: MFA in Theatre with emphases in acting, costume design, directing, lighting design, playwriting, and scenic design. Requirements

  • Terminal degree in Theatre (or a closely related field) from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment
  • Demonstrated evidence of specific knowledge in vocal methodology and an understanding of vocal function and pedagogical techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to teach voice techniques, International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and dialects for the stage as well as an additional emphasis in the performance areas such as acting, directing, script analysis, and/or other areas of interest
  • Evidence of, or a demonstrated potential for, an active research agenda and/or scholarly/creative activity
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in a voice system such as Linklater, Fitzmaurice, Knight-Thompson, Skinner, Lessac, Accent, etc
  • Active membership in a recognized professional voice organization such as VASTA, PAVA, BVA, etc
  • Demonstrated ability to advise, mentor, and support undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective undergraduate and graduate classes that complement the current course catalog. Examples may include: Acting, Acting for Camera, Script Analysis, and Appreciation courses
  • Strong evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team both on campus and in relevant national service organizations
