About The Position

St. Olaf College's Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Statistics and Data Science to begin in August 2027. The role involves teaching, research, and supervising undergraduate research, contributing to a growing statistics and data science program. The typical teaching load is five courses annually, covering introductory to advanced levels. Key aspects of the position include fostering community and inclusivity within the department and college, student advising, and other service duties. Requirements

  • PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or a closely related field such as Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics, or Epidemiology with a demonstrated interest and background in Statistics and Data Science.
  • Candidates with interest/experience in Data Science who are poised to expand course offerings at the 300-level are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of a diverse and inclusive learning community through teaching, research, and/or service.
  • Provide contact information for three professional references who can speak to abilities in teaching and scholarship.
  • Cover letter (no more than 3 pages) detailing specific interest in St. Olaf College's MSCS Department, training and experience in Statistics (especially if PhD is not in Statistics or Biostatistics), experience and vision for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, experience and vision for teaching undergraduate students (including inclusive pedagogy, active/innovative teaching strategies, and assessment), and contributions to the scholarly field and future research goals.
  • Graduate transcripts (unofficial).
  • Teaching Statement: Statement of teaching philosophy, including discussion of pedagogical techniques for an active, inclusive classroom.
  • Professional Statement: Statement of research interests, including potential for undergraduate research engagement, written for a general statistics and data science audience.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute broadly to the statistics and data science program through teaching, research, and supervision of undergraduate research.
  • Teach courses at all levels of the curriculum, from introductory to upper-level courses in one’s field of expertise.
  • Promote community-building and inclusivity within the MSCS Department and the College.
  • Student advising.
  • Other service work in the department and across the college.
  • Engage undergraduates in innovative research.
  • Teach a variety of courses across the Statistics and Data Science curriculum.
  • Collaborate on research projects, potentially involving undergraduates through St. Olaf’s Collaborative Undergraduate Research and Inquiry program.
  • Collaborate on research with faculty and students from other disciplines through the Center for Interdisciplinary Research.
