Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Music seeks an Assistant Professor of Music Theory for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate programs through teaching, scholarship or creative accomplishment, and service. The position reports to the chair and operates under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The teaching load is four classes (or the equivalent) per long term, fall and spring, for an equivalent of 24 teaching load credits combined across those semesters. Teaching includes undergraduate theory and aural skills, graduate theory, and supervision of master’s theses. The assignment may include asynchronous online graduate courses. Candidates may specialize in any area of music theory; experience in popular music is particularly welcome to help expand current course offerings. The Assistant Professor is expected to engage in research, scholarly or creative work, and service appropriate to faculty rank and departmental tenure and merit criteria; provide service to the university and profession; and participate in reviews of lower-ranked faculty. When tenured, the faculty member participates in tenure reviews. Supplemental work may include independent studies, internships, advising, and thesis or dissertation supervision. The role may also involve supervising student or graduate assistants, serving on committees, and other related duties. The position is based at SFA in Nacogdoches, Texas. It is a security-sensitive position subject to a criminal record check and an IT-sensitive position subject to the university’s Computer and Network Security policy. Applicants must be legally able to accept employment in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.
