About The Position

The San Diego State University Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in advanced processing of powder materials, with a specific focus on sintering science and technology. The position begins in Fall 2027. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University, an R1 research university serving more than 40,000 students, offers an EAC/ABET accredited B.S. degree, an M.S. degree, and a joint Ph.D. program with the University of California San Diego, with research strengths in manufacturing, materials, design, energy, mechatronics, robotics and control, and bioengineering. The successful candidate will work in the department's Powder Technology Laboratory and is expected to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program that builds on existing strengths and develops collaborations across the department, the College of Engineering, and regional industry partners.

Requirements

  • A record of original research / scholarly / creative accomplishments.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop a vigorous and independent program of research / scholarship / creative activity.
  • Demonstrated capacity to teach graduate and undergraduate courses.
  • Demonstrated capacity to engage in both campus and professional service activities.
  • Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two (2) or more of the “Building on Inclusive Excellence” criteria.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries.
  • Terminal degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with all degree requirements met (by date of hire).

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated expertise in sintering science and technology and in the processing of powder materials.
  • Experience in advanced manufacturing or additive manufacturing of powder materials, including processing–structure–property–performance relationships and scalable fabrication methods.
  • Experience applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to materials engineering, such as data driven materials design, process optimization, or modeling of powder processing and sintering.
  • Record of publications, presentations, and/or funding.
  • Potential for securing extramural funding.
  • Experience collaborating with industry partners.
  • University level teaching experience in materials science, manufacturing, or related areas of mechanical engineering, including teaching students from diverse backgrounds.
