About The Position

The Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Alabama is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Marine Biogeochemistry and Paleoceanography. The ideal candidate will be a field- and laboratory-based geoscientist whose research focuses on the cycling of climate-relevant elements in marine environments. This role involves connecting modern ocean processes with environmental and ecological signals found in sediments and the fossil record. The position is within the J. Frank Barefield Jr. College of Arts and Sciences, which is the largest college at the University of Alabama, housing over 9,000 students and 1,000 faculty and staff across 22 departments.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in geoscience, marine science, paleoceanography, biogeochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Evidence of research productivity and the potential to establish an independent, externally-funded research program.
  • Ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels and contribute to core and elective courses.

Nice To Haves

  • A record of scholarship in marine biogeochemistry, chemical oceanography, and/or stable-isotope or trace-element geochemistry.
  • Research integrating stable-isotope geochemistry with microfossil, biomineral, sedimentary, or other marine archives to connect modern-ocean processes with paleoenvironmental or paleoceanographic reconstructions.
  • Experience with marine fieldwork and laboratory analysis of seawater, organic matter, sediments, biominerals, or microfossils.
  • Experience with high-resolution analytical methods and the potential to contribute to shared instrumentation facilities and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
  • At least two years of postdoctoral research experience by the appointment date.
  • Teaching and mentoring experience relevant to departmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Establish an externally funded research program.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Collaborate with other researchers across the University.
