About The Position

The University of Virginia School of Architecture is seeking outstanding designers and educators for an Assistant Professor position, serving as the inaugural Morven Research Fellow. This is a two-year, non-tenure track role, renewable for a third year based on successful review of teaching and research. The position requires both research and teaching, with a strong interest in land-based research projects that include fieldwork, designed experiments, and/or regenerative land management. The Morven Fellow will bridge the new pan-university UVA Morven Sustainability Lab (MSL) and the School of Architecture (A-School) through their teaching in the graduate program's core curriculum and involvement in field experiments and creative land management at Morven. The successful candidate should be adept at planning and designing across various scales, eager for fieldwork, and possess cross-disciplinary interests. The role involves developing a creative research project and associated pedagogy, with mentorship from the Landscape Architecture Department Chair and MSL Faculty Director. The academic appointment and review process are managed through the School of Architecture.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated design skills.
  • Particular interest in a land-based research project that includes fieldwork, designed experiments and/or regenerative land management.
  • Facile planning and designing across various scales.
  • Eager to undertake fieldwork.
  • Cross-disciplinary interests with other disciplines in the university (e.g., environmental sciences, architecture, architectural history, urban and environmental planning).
  • Compelling research proposals.
  • Share the School and MSL commitment to advancing missions toward more just, compelling and courageous futures for our institution, practices, and constructed environment.
  • Terminal degree in Landscape Architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and teaching.
  • Connect the UVA Morven Sustainability Lab (MSL) and the School of Architecture (A-School) through teaching and involvement in field experiments and creative land management at Morven.
  • Plan and design across various scales.
  • Undertake fieldwork.
  • Develop cross-disciplinary interests with other disciplines in the university (e.g., environmental sciences, architecture, architectural history, urban and environmental planning).
  • Develop a creative research project and associated pedagogy at the University of Virginia.
  • Maintain a teaching load of three courses per academic year, including two in the graduate Landscape Architecture core (a design studio and a required course).
  • Teach a third elective course open to students across the University, centered on Morven.
  • Develop a land-based research project at Morven related to the MSL Strategic Action plan goals and initiatives.
  • Further specific research agendas including the creation and implementation of a 1000-acre Experimental Forest, the regenerative silvopasture initiative, and the regeneration of 1000 acres of mixed hardwood forest on Carter Mountain.
  • Potentially supplement nine-month salary by teaching elective courses in January or Summer terms, or co-teaching in the School of Architecture’s Summer Design Institute.
