About The Position

Marian University seeks a full-time Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sports Science to promote its Catholic Franciscan mission and identity. The role involves teaching a broad range of courses in the exercise and sports science program, conducting scholarly research, and advising students. This is a 9-month faculty appointment starting in August 2027, with rank, tenure, and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The university is located in Indianapolis, Indiana, known as the ‘Sports Capital of the World.’

Requirements

  • An earned doctorate in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or closely related discipline. ABDs will be considered if the degree is earned by September 1, 2027.
  • Demonstrated skills and/or experience in teaching, research, and service, with the ideal candidate complementing our existing faculty and being able to work effectively on a team.
  • Evidence of ongoing scholarly agenda or demonstrated ability in developing a scholarly agenda.
  • Knowledge of and a commitment to the mission of Marian University.
  • Adheres to Marian University’s policies and procedures.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and mentoring skills.
  • Shows courtesy and respect in interactions with fellow employees, students, and supervisors.
  • Communicates regularly with supervisor.
  • Meets department/unit teaching, scholarship, and service standards.
  • Participate in developing department/unit goals, objectives, and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Create and deliver quality learning experiences that are consistent with the ESS department’s mission and curricular guiding principles.
  • Collaborate with other faculty both within and outside of the ESS department.
  • Utilize expertise to teach a variety of exercise science courses.
  • Demonstrate teaching effectiveness and appropriate use of educational technology.
  • Engage in and contribute to departmental initiatives in curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation to maintain high-quality educational experiences.
  • Provide timely and meaningful assessments of student progress towards successful completion of courses and program.
  • Role model Franciscan values through collaborative endeavors and service to the university, profession, and communities.
  • Serve on at least one committee or task force annually at the university, unit, or department level.
  • Attend and engage in student recruitment, orientation, advising, and retention efforts year round.
  • Advise students on their academic progress and intended career path.
  • Attend and engage in all department, college, and full faculty meetings.
  • Engage in professional membership and service.
  • Mentor students in research and scholarly activities.
  • Contribute to the exercise and sports science professions through the incorporation of scholarship.
  • Engage in scholarly activity internal and external to the university.
  • Initiate, adopt, evaluate, and uphold program and University policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Create a professional development plan that aligns with department and university strategic plan and continued professional growth.
  • Participate in annual faculty evaluation consistent with university practices.
  • Participate in developing department/unit goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Assists to establish department/unit measurements that align and support the accomplishment of the University’s strategic goals.
  • Adheres to the department budget.
