About The Position

Southwestern Community College District (SWCCD) is seeking a full-time, tenure-track, equity-focused faculty member committed to serving its’ culturally diverse student population. Requirements

  • Any Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of experience in an allied health field, AND certified or Licensed in the State of California as a Physician, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or Paramedic AND forty (40) hours of documented instruction in teaching methodology AND two years of academic or clinical experience in the practice of emergency medicine or prehospital care in the last five (5) years
  • OR Any Associates Degree and six (6) six years of experience in an allied health field AND certified or Licensed in the State of California as a Physician, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or Paramedic AND forty (40) hours of documented instruction in teaching methodology AND two years of academic or clinical experience in the practice of emergency medicine or prehospital care in the last five (5) years.
  • Additional assessment is required for applicants with foreign degrees from colleges or universities outside of the United States. Applicants must have their coursework evaluated by a professional association that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services ( NACES ) and must submit a copy of the evaluation with the application.
  • Candidates must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities.
  • Candidates selected for employment with SWCCD must be fingerprinted by an electronic fingerprinting service (i.e. LiveScan) within 10 days of employment; provide clearance of tuberculosis (dated within the past 4 years and renewed every four years as a condition of continued employment) within 60 days of employment; provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in the discipline.
  • Experience and ability to address equity gaps within the discipline in the classroom.
  • Knowledge of what is means to work in a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution in regards to institutional, department and instructional practices.
  • Recent work experience as a field paramedic or recent experience as a Mobile Intensive Care Nurse within the State of California.
  • Teaching experience in an accredited EMT/Paramedic training program.
  • Instructor certifications in CPR, PALS, ACLS, and PHTLS.
  • Experience working in a community with a similar diversity pattern as is found in the service area for Southwestern College is desirable.
  • A fire service background or understands the common dynamics between the EMS and fire services.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Program Director of the EMT/Paramedic, teach the courses of Emergency Medical Technician programs and other related classes, as necessary.
  • The instructor may be assigned to teach in either the EMT and/or paramedic program based on departmental needs.
  • The desired candidate is a proven prehospital care provider and has experience in teaching, mentoring, and leading those around them.
  • Familiarity with the rigors and expectations which come with accreditation status.
  • Ability to form partnerships in the community.
  • Experience in teaching general EMS education courses.
  • Demonstrates professional knowledge of EMS and changes in the field.
  • Understanding of the role and purpose of the community college.
  • Ability to evaluate one’s andragogy and its effectiveness in facilitating student learning.
  • Ability to use teaching methods that engage racially, ethnically, academically, and culturally diverse students; promote critical thinking and emphasize cooperation and collaboration.
  • Commitment to collegiality and collaboration by working as a team with faculty and staff enhancing instruction, curriculum, and student success; as well as in the planning of class schedules and teaching rotations.
  • Knowledge and practice of culturally responsive pedagogy and andragogy that supports student-centered, self-reflective, and student-capable approaches which includes a wide range of institutional delivery systems.
  • Ability to teach online courses.
  • Commitment to professional responsibilities and associations outside of the classroom through contributions to the department, division and college activities.
