Assistant Professor of Earth Science
About The Position
California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Earth Science. This position is within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Department of Earth Science. CSULB is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) with a strong commitment to serving diverse students and promoting inclusive excellence. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Geology and Earth Systems, and a Master's degree in Geology, emphasizing hands-on experience with excellent instrumentation and equipment. The location provides access to diverse geological and environmental areas for research and field activities.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Geoscience or related field at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2027.
- Record of research in the broadly defined fields of Earth Materials, Mineralogy, Petrology, Economic Geology or in any other geoscience discipline that substantially employs Earth Materials methods in their research
- Ability to teach undergraduate courses in Earth Materials, Mineralogy, Petrology, as well as other Earth Science courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level
- Demonstrated commitment to be an effective teacher at undergraduate and graduate levels
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population

- Commitment to learning and incorporating pedagogical best practices to create equitable courses that promote student learning
- A record of academic publication and research activity commensurate with experience in the applicant’s field of expertise

Responsibilities
- Teach introductory and expertise-related subjects at undergraduate and graduate (M.S. degree) levels, as needed by the department, including Mineralogy, Petrology, and/or Earth Materials. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
- Mentor undergraduate and Masters-level graduate students in research
- Engage and maintain an active research program involving students and leading to peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations
- Actively pursue external support for research and student funding through grants and contracts
- Collaborate with colleagues in curriculum development and program assessment
- Participate in service to the department, college, university, profession, and community
