The Department of English in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Early Modern British Literature to start in August 2027. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment. The successful applicant can expect to teach two courses per semester, including Introduction to Shakespeare. Other courses could include a graduate course on early modern British literature, an upper-level undergraduate Special Topics course, a survey of early British literature, and Introduction to Literature for majors and non-majors. The University of Arkansas has a vibrant community of pre-modernists and an active program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies that sponsors reading groups, conferences, and a colloquium series. The University of Arkansas, ranked as a Research 1 doctoral university with very high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation, is the flagship university in the state system. In addition to teaching duties, the successful applicant will be expected to pursue an active program of research and contribute to the institution’s research mission as well as perform academically related service. We seek a candidate with a strong and developing national reputation, achieved through a compelling research record. Duties include designing graduate and undergraduate courses, providing curriculum material, constructing syllabi, leading classroom instruction, developing assessments, coaching students in the writing of essays, and mentoring and evaluating students. This is an in-person position. Most university classes are offered face-to-face, and extensive in-person engagement in such activities as office hours, student advising, and departmental, college, and university committee meetings is essential to advancing student success and departmental effectiveness. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
