About The Position

The Department of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Carnegie classified R2 institution, seeks outstanding applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Christianity in Late Antiquity. Requirements

Ph.D. or other relevant doctoral degree (e.g., Th.D) from an accredited institution.
ABD candidates will be considered but must fulfill all degree requirements by August 15, 2027.
Training and research agenda should reflect the regional and linguistic diversity of the “Christianities” which existed in Late Antiquity.
Prepared to teach neglected church mothers.
Prepared to teach major figures within Christian orthodoxy as well as more marginalized figures and movements.
Prepared to engage the broader religious and social world of Late Antiquity.
Evidence of successful university-level teaching experience, both in-person and/or online.
Commitment to advancing LMU’s mission and promoting the success, sense of belonging, and thriving of students from a variety of lived experiences.

Scholarship and/or teaching in the development and controversy within Christian doctrine (Christology, Trinity, Pneumatology, Anthropology, Eschatology).
Scholarship and/or teaching in Patristics.
Scholarship and/or teaching in the emergence of diverse Christian cultures in the form of institutions, literary and textual production (hagiography, monastic rules), or moral program.
Scholarship and/or teaching in the history of Christian Asceticism, especially its diverse attitudes toward the body (i.e. food, sex, death, decay, and resurrection).
Scholarship and/or teaching in the development of Christian ethics or political thought.
Scholarship and/or teaching in the history of biblical interpretation (biblical scholarship, competing exegetical practices, ideal interpreters).

Responsibilities

Teaching undergraduate courses in the University Core, the Theological Studies Major and Minor programs.
Teaching graduate courses in the MA in Theology and MA in Pastoral Theology programs.
Engaging students as whole persons.
Pursuing scholarly and creative work that promotes justice, equity, and the common good.
Contributing to the intellectual and institutional life of the university.
Mentoring students.
Participating in service activities at the academic, professional, and/or community levels.
