Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, Physiologist
About The Position
California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences specializing in Physiology. This is a tenure-track position with an effective date of August 17, 2027. The university is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) committed to serving diverse students and promoting inclusive excellence. The position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in physiology, developing and sustaining an independent, externally funded research program involving students, and contributing to departmental and university service. The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Department of Biological Sciences are dedicated to providing a student-centered, equitable, and diverse educational and research environment.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in the life sciences
- Postdoctoral research experience
- Research experience in physiological sciences
- A record of research productivity commensurate with experience level
- Demonstrated commitment to effective teaching of physiology courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students
Nice To Haves
- At least two years of postdoctoral research experience
- Research experience in physiological sciences in topics that may broadly include: integrative physiology, systems physiology, molecular or cellular level physiology, behavioral physiology, or ecological physiology
- Demonstrated potential for establishing externally funded student-focused laboratory-based research program that does not rely extensively on the use of a vivarium
- Teaching experience at the college level, especially in physiological sciences
- Experience in/commitment to incorporating pedagogical best practices to create equitable courses that promote student learning
- Demonstrated interest in increasing the participation of CSULB students in STEM fields through teaching and mentoring
- Experience in working with and supporting student populations similar to the diverse CSULB student body
- Experience effectively mentoring students in research settings
Responsibilities
- Develop and teach courses in physiology (human, mammalian, and comparative, for majors or non-majors), and/or senior-level and graduate-level physiology classes that are aligned with discipline expertise.
- Teaching mode is at the discretion of the department. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
- Contribute to our efforts to diversify the scientific workforce by effectively training students both inside and outside the classroom, including the research laboratory
- Develop and sustain an independent, externally funded laboratory-based research program in physiological sciences, that involves undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) students and leads to conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications with student co-authors
- Participate in service to the department, college, university, profession, and community
