Assistant Professor of Biliteracy Education (Spanish-English)

About The Position

San Diego State University’s Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in Spanish-English biliteracy. This faculty member will lead the department in biliteracy initiatives, teaching biliteracy credential courses, and conducting biliteracy research. The successful candidate will advance the department’s commitment to equity, linguistic and social justice through teaching, scholarship, and community engagement. The Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education (DLE) is regarded as one of the leading bilingual teacher education programs in the state, with a 50-year history of championing bilingual education for linguistically diverse students and communities. With bilingual teaching credential and MA programs, DLE seeks a team member with expertise in biliteracy research, teaching, and pedagogy and experience and/or openness to collaborating with education partners in Mexico.

Requirements

  • A record of original research, scholarly accomplishments, and/or grant funding
  • Demonstrated expertise in biliteracy teaching, biliteracy studies and/or biliteracy methodologies
  • Demonstrated capacity to a) develop a rigorous and independent program of research/scholarship, b) teach graduate/undergraduate courses; and c) engage in both campus and professional service activities
  • Bilingualism and biliteracy in Spanish-English
  • K-12 Teaching Experience
  • Experience working with multilingual students, families, and communities
  • Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two (2) or more of the “Building on Inclusive Excellence” criteria
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education, Language and Literacy Education, or similar field, with all degree requirements met by date of hire (August 2027)

Nice To Haves

  • California Multiple Subject/Elementary Teaching Credential with three years of teaching experience in TK-6th grade
  • Evidence of local, state, national, and/or international collaborations across institutions and disciplines
  • Experiences with Travel Abroad and/or Transborder/International Studies
  • Demonstrated expertise in bilingual education, biliteracy development, translanguaging, transborder education, and culturally sustaining pedagogies
  • University-level teaching experience, including teaching students from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to direct advanced undergraduate and / or graduate student research
  • Experience with teaching in hybrid and online environments
