About The Position

This on-campus position at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) requires teaching a variety of accounting courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including but not limited to Principles of Accounting I & II, Intermediate Accounting I & II, Cost Accounting I & II, Federal Tax I & II, Accounting Information Systems, Advanced Accounting, Auditing, Forensic Accounting, and Sustainability Accounting. Instruction will be delivered through classroom and online formats. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student club advising, involvement in department projects, assessment data collection, representing the department at campus-wide recruiting events, and participating in campus committees. The role also involves contributing to student growth and development, participating in department and institutional activities, evaluating student performance, engaging in scholarly activities, and providing service to the University and community. SMSU expects faculty to engage in regional service, education, or study as part of their community service responsibility.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or DBA with an emphasis in Accounting from a regionally accredited institution. Applicants who are ABD will be considered if degree requirements are expected to be completed before the appointment start date.
  • Experience teaching and/or developing undergraduate accounting courses.
  • Evidence of teaching experience in classroom, online, and/or hybrid instructional formats.
  • Evidence of written communication skills through application materials and professional, academic, or scholarly work.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States by the first day of employment.
  • The University will not consider H-1B sponsorship.
  • Employment or Visa sponsorship, other than H-1B status, must be pre-approved by the University prior to offer acceptance.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience in accounting courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Professional work experience in accounting outside of academia.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and business/community groups, including but not limited to participating in department accreditation events, student club advising, etc.
  • Evidence of teaching performance through student evaluations, peer evaluations, teaching awards, or other documented measures.
  • Evidence of current scholarly activity.
  • Experience advising, mentoring, coaching, or supporting students through student organizations, internships, research activities, or academic advising.
  • Understand and appreciate liberal education.
  • The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach and work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Professional certification such as CPA, CMA, CIA, CFE, CGMA, or other relevant accounting credential.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching and coordinating the courses and curricula for SMSU’s Accounting program
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting
  • Engaging in additional activities to support the accounting program and the Business Innovation & Strategy Department, including but not limited to student recruitment and retention to enhance enrollment in the program, and Accounting Club mentorship.
  • Meeting the expectations of a full-time SMSU probationary faculty member as defined in the MinnState-IFO Agreement.
  • Participating fully in the activities and programs of SMSU’s Business Innovation & Strategy Department
  • Fulfilling the expectations of a full-time probationary faculty member at SMSU in accordance with SMSU’s Assessment and Strategic Plan and its mission, vision, and values.
  • Engaging in scholarly and creative activity, continuing preparation and study, contributing to student growth and development, and serving the SMSU Community.
  • Engaging in regional service as part of their community service activities.
