About The Position

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, tenure-accruing position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 16, 2027, in the History of Modern Philosophy. The successful candidate will pursue an active research agenda in Early Modern Philosophy and provide service to the department, the university, and the profession. Although candidates must have Early Modern Philosophy as their core area of research, additional expertise in either Medieval Philosophy or 19th-Century Philosophy would be useful as the department has teaching needs in all these areas. Tenure-line faculty are typically assigned four courses per academic year at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to regularly teaching required courses for the undergraduate Philosophy major and minor, the ability to contribute significantly to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students will also be expected. The department has recently grown with multiple hires in the last several years and currently has a significant number of faculty working primarily in the history of philosophy. It is committed to ensuring a robust coverage of all the core areas of philosophy, though it has developed special strength in the ethics of technology and the philosophy of artificial intelligence. The department also has a good working relationship with the newly established Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education, which has hired several faculty members with interests in the history of philosophy during the past few years.

Requirements

Ph.D. in Philosophy or complete the Ph.D. by date of hire.
Active research agenda in Early Modern Philosophy.
Evidence of effective teaching.
