About The Position

The Department of Psychology at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is seeking to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The position requires a doctoral degree in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, or a related field by the time of appointment. Experience in couples or relationship-focused therapy is strongly preferred. The role involves teaching undergraduate and master's level courses, including Family Processes, and providing clinical supervision to master's students training to become California marriage and family therapists. Additional teaching opportunities may include graduate courses like Marriage and Family Skills and Community Disaster, Trauma, and Resilience, as well as undergraduate courses such as Abnormal Psychology. Successful candidates will be scientist-practitioners who ground their work in evidence-based practice and demonstrate the potential to mentor students in scholarship. The start date for the position is August 16, 2027.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, or closely related area, in hand by time of appointment.
  • Licensed or license-eligible as a mental health clinician (i.e., psychologist, MFT, LPCC) in California. Candidates who are not yet licensed are expected to obtain California licensure within three years of hire.
  • Graduate-level coursework or research qualifying the candidate to teach undergraduate courses in clinical/counseling psychology (e.g., Abnormal Psychology, Introduction to Psychotherapy), graduate-level courses in couples and relationship-focused treatment, and meet California requirements to provide clinical supervision to Marriage and Family Therapy trainees (e.g., licensed or license-eligible psychologist, marriage and family therapist, or professional clinical counselor).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in couples or relationship-focused therapy (e.g., family therapy).
  • Other research/clinical areas complementary to the current faculty is welcome, and could include but is not limited to evidence-based treatments for mental-health disorders, PTSD/trauma, anxiety disorders, and discrimination/mental-health disparities.
  • Candidates who are already licensed or license-eligible in California (e.g., licensed in another state or completion of 1,500 hours of supervised post-doctoral experience) are preferred.
  • Candidates who are not yet licensed should be eligible to obtain California licensure within three years of hire and demonstrate a clear pathway toward providing clinical supervision to California Marriage and Family Therapy trainees.
  • Demonstrated experience in evidence-based couples or relationship-focused assessment, intervention, or supervision.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in both undergraduate and graduate teaching, including the knowledge to teach courses across clinical and counseling psychology.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in person with demonstrated effectiveness.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students, particularly first-generation and nontraditional students.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in clinical supervision. Candidates who are not already eligible to provide clinical supervision to California Marriage and Family Therapy trainees must demonstrate the ability and commitment to satisfy the required eligibility criteria within the timeframe necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity and potential to develop a sustained program of scholarship involving undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Graduate-level training in research design and statistics sufficient to supervise master's theses and undergraduate honors theses.
  • Research and clinical emphases that complement departmental priorities and support evidence-based practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate assessment and apply empirical research to clinical decision-making, supervision, and teaching.
  • Demonstrated ethical and professional judgment in teaching, clinical practice, supervision, research, and/or service.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, staff, and community partners.
  • Additional successful experience as instructor of record or teaching assistant with instructional responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and master’s level courses in clinical/counseling psychology.
  • Teach Family Processes.
  • Provide clinical supervision to master’s students training to become California marriage and family therapists.
  • Teach graduate courses such as Marriage and Family Skills and Community Disaster, Trauma, and Resilience.
  • Teach undergraduate courses such as Advanced Seminar in Psychology: Clinical, Introduction to Psychotherapy, and Abnormal Psychology.
  • Maintain an active program of scholarship appropriate to the mission of a teaching-focused university through peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, including supervising undergraduate honors theses and master's theses.
  • Provide clinical supervision to master's-level trainees in the campus’s Community Counseling Center.
  • Contribute to the life of the department, college, and university through service activities, collaboration with colleagues, curriculum development, and participation in shared governance.
  • Support students' academic and professional development.
  • Engage in continuous professional growth.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
