About The Position

The Department of English at Iowa State University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Applied Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The role involves research and teaching related to AI's impact on language learning, teaching, assessment, and human-computer interaction. The successful candidate will contribute to both undergraduate and graduate programs, potentially teaching courses in applied linguistics, AI technologies, natural language processing, and computational text analysis. This position is part of a strategic initiative to enhance the university's strengths in AI and its applications, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration within the university and with external partners. The position begins August 16, 2027, and requires candidates to be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Requirements

  • PhD in applied linguistics, linguistics, natural language processing, computational linguistics, or a related field conferred by time of appointment.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.
  • Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in applied linguistics and artificial intelligence, focusing on areas such as AI in language learning, generative AI in human-computer interaction, or the role of language in user experience with AI.
  • Teach undergraduate courses in linguistics and applied linguistics, including electives for the Applied Artificial Intelligence minor and new courses integrating AI technologies.
  • Teach graduate courses in applied linguistics and technology, potentially contributing to interdisciplinary programs like Human Computer Interaction.
  • Develop new course offerings that integrate AI technologies into linguistics.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary programs and campus-wide strategic initiatives related to trusted innovation and artificial intelligence.
  • Exhibit and convey good citizenship within the program, department, college, and university.
  • Maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.
