About The Position

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-eligible Academic Faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor rank in the Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science, College of Education, University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The selectee is required to complete the College of Education New Faculty Orientation during the first year of appointment, Title IX training, other required training, and must undergo and pass a criminal background check. This position will be appointed as the Director of Clinical Education responsibilities in the developing Doctor of Physical Therapy program in Spring 2027. This appointment is an 11-month, one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon program needs, availability of funds, and satisfying work performance. The Director of Clinical Education will lead the development, coordination, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of the clinical education component of the DPT program. If the faculty member no longer serves as Director of Clinical Education, the appointment structure will revert to the individual’s regular 9-month Academic Faculty appointment in KRS, consistent with applicable University requirements, funding, workload, and appointment terms.

Requirements

  • An earned terminal academic doctoral degree from an accredited institution, such as a PhD, EdD, DSc, ScD, DHSc, or other relevant terminal academic doctorate in physical therapy, rehabilitation science, health sciences, education, or a closely related field. A DPT or transitional DPT degree alone does not satisfy the terminal academic doctorate requirement.
  • Physical therapist who holds an active, unencumbered physical therapist license in any United States jurisdiction and is eligible for licensure in the State of Hawai'i. The selectee must be in compliance with the Hawai'i physical therapy practice act prior to assuming duties that require such compliance at the time of hire.
  • Minimum of three years of full-time, or equivalent, post-licensure clinical practice as a physical therapist.
  • Minimum of two years of clinical practice experience as a Site Coordinator of Clinical Education or Clinical Instructor in physical therapy; or a minimum of two years of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and administration in a physical therapist education program.
  • Contemporary expertise in clinical education, physical therapist education, and assigned DPT teaching areas.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, clinical teaching, mentoring, and/or evaluation of student learning.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity or potential for scholarly productivity appropriate to faculty classification, rank, workload, and assigned responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of CAPTE standards and required elements related to clinical education, student assessment, clinical site development, and accreditation compliance.

Nice To Haves

  • Board-certified clinical specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties or equivalent advanced clinical certification.
  • Prior experience as a Director of Clinical Education, Assistant Director of Clinical Education, or equivalent clinical education leadership role in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
  • Experience with, or ability to contribute to, DPT program development, CAPTE accreditation, candidacy preparation, clinical education assessment, or clinical site development.
  • Experience with, or ability to support, hybrid, blended, or technology-enhanced instruction in a physical therapy or related health professions program.
  • Experience working with rural, neighbor island, underserved, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, or other diverse communities.
  • Evidence of applied, educational, clinical, community-engaged, or discipline-specific scholarship.

Responsibilities

  • When appointed as Director of Clinical Education, responsibilities are to direct all aspects of the clinical education portion of the DPT program, ensuring compliance with program outcomes and CAPTE standards.
  • Develop and manage clinical partnerships, affiliation agreements, and oversee adequate clinical placement opportunities.
  • Support collaboration among the College of Education, John A. Burns School of Medicine, clinical partners, community organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee student clinical placements, performance assessment, and provide continuous quality improvement.
  • Foster collaboration and provide support for faculty, students, Clinical Instructors, and clinical education partners.
  • Teach graduate-level DPT curriculum courses and contribute to curriculum development, assessment, and clinical education outcomes.
  • Oversee student clinical performance, remediation, and preparation for clinical education and professional practice.
  • Collaborate with faculty on student progression, advising, and professional development while mentoring DPT students.
  • Contribute to student preparation for full-time clinical education experiences and entry-level physical therapist practice.
  • Maintain an active scholarly agenda and disseminate peer-reviewed and professional scholarship aligned with institutional and CAPTE expectations.
  • Contribute to DPT curriculum development, program assessment, accreditation, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Evaluate student, clinical education, and program outcomes to support program effectiveness and excellence.
  • Contribute to program, university, professional, and community service through admissions, recruitment, governance, and policy development activities.
  • Support interprofessional collaboration, accreditation readiness, and CAPTE reporting and documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
